What kind of books are the "Alice in the Wonderland"series?

Hey, I remember when I was a kid I really enjoyed the game, which was quite freaky. The movie was really weird too. Now that the new game has come out, it got me curious of the actual books. Are they as weird as the games and movie or are they just children's books?
